Take Advantage of Summertime Community Engagement

Hi everyone. This is Sarah Robinson, president and CEO of Fierce Loyalty, Inc. and author of Fierce Loyalty: Unlocking the DNA of Wildly Successful Communities. It is summertime. It is so tempting when it's hot outside to lay back and take it easy, not do all the work that you usually do to keep your community humming. Believe me, I totally get it. Participation can be down, engagement is down, people are on vacation and it's just easy to relax and not do the hard work you know needs to be done. 

Here's something to think about: the other side of it being summertime is that it's an easier pace for your community members. They may be using that time to get caught up with what's going on in their community and have an easier time with engaging. They may be looking for a summer hangout, a place where they can just sort of be and come and go and learn what they want to learn. You can take advantage of this. I want you to think of it as sort of the way a restaurant changes things up in the summertime. They have lighter fare, the plates are smaller. People just come and go, they add a dash of fun. They keep the environment really relaxed so that people feel comfortable hanging out there. If you listen to the kinds of conversations that happen when restaurants ease they're pace a little bit, they're easier. You hear people talking a little bit more casually and intimately about what's going on in their lives.

You can duplicate that in your community. You can keep your communications light and fun, keep your content easy and simple to digest. Maybe you do a really short article or one tip a day or one tip a week that  they can absolutely take action on it. Or maybe you change things up and do a video like this just to keep things light and different. Let your members come and go. Let them be at ease with whatever pace they have. Your job is to keep the environment light, welcoming and easy so that people feel comfortable and they find the hangout that they're looking for, for the summer. You can be that hangout.

That's my recommendation. Take note from your favorite summer restaurant, your favorite summer hangout and change up your menu. Change up the environment, change up the atmosphere and people will absolutely be hanging out in your community.
