Meet Your Community Manager: Heather Arkwright

Written by Molly Talbert | on May 10, 2016 at 8:30 AM

Ever wonder who the people behind the curtain are here at Higher Logic? We're introducing you to our community managers. They’ll talk about why they love community management, helpful resources to use and weigh in on the dog versus cat debate (as you can see, this is serious stuff…).

In this fourth installment, we’re introducing our newest community manager, Heather Arkwright.

Q. What excites you about community mangement?

A: Community management, to me, is all about bringing people together through a common interest, goal, or motivation. This is extremely exciting because it’s a way to build connections with others in a meaningful and powerful way. I truly think we all strive to create and maintain meaningful relationships with others – and online communities provide an easy and wildly effective way to do this. Because of all of these things, it feels incredibly fulfilling as a community manager to be able facilitate a place for these relationships to be fostered and grown.

Q. How did you get into community management?

A: Honestly, community management wasn’t a career path I even considered when I was in college. I majored in journalism and communications, but wasn’t finding fulfillment in writing news stories because I craved real connections (which is hard to do when you’re tasked with writing an unbiased news story!). At my previous job, I did a lot with client management, customer success, and eventually community management. I found that community management really hit all of my major needs, because it combined written communication, connecting with people, helping clients build a successful community, and, to some extent, a marketing component.

Q. Favorite community management resource?

A: Feverbee is fantastic! It provides so much information in short, easily digestible video clips that really break down the strategy behind building communities.

Q. What's your favorite book?

A: I’m really into books that go into the theory behind communication and how we as humans can interpret, and subsequently react to, different messaging. I love “Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion” by Robert Cialdini, as well as “Yes!: 50 Scientifically Proven Ways to Be Persuasive.”

Q. Dog or cat? (Or neither?!)

A: DOGS!! I do not have one just yet (living in the city makes it hard), however I hope to one day have a corgi named Noodle.
